Mental Health Disorders Linked to Alcohol and Substance Abuse
The Mental Health Authority of Ghana has reported a concerning rise in mental health disorders linked to alcohol and substance abuse.
In 2023, 3,765 cases of alcohol-related mental disorders and 5,554 cases related to other substances were recorded.
The Bono Regional Director of Mental Health Authority, Joseph Yele, attributed the high incidence of alcoholism in the region (4th highest in the country) to poor working conditions, stress, and anxiety.
He emphasized the need for decent job opportunities and better working relationships to reduce the reliance on alcohol and drugs as coping mechanisms.
Yele urged the government and private sector to prioritize youth employment and wellbeing, advising young people to avoid substance abuse and strive for healthy lives as they are the future leaders of Ghana.
