From AFCON Spotlight to Global Success: The Inspiring Journey of Mimi Boateng

As Africa gears up for AFCON 2025 in Morocco, many Ghanaians are looking back at memorable moments from past tournaments  and one name that keeps resurfacing is Mimi Boateng.

In 2008, during the AFCON final at the Accra Sports Stadium, an 8-year-old Mimi captured the continent’s attention when she proudly carried the tournament trophy onto the pitch. The image of the young girl confidently leading the way became one of the tournament’s most iconic moments.

Today, that little girl has grown into a remarkable young woman.

Mimi Boateng is now a graduate of University College London (UCL), holding a degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering  one of the most competitive engineering programmes in the UK. She currently works as a Project Analyst at Ernst & Young (EY), one of the world’s leading consulting and professional services firms.

Her story has sparked admiration across social media, with many describing her journey as a powerful reminder of the potential within Ghanaian youth when given visibility and opportunity.

As AFCON returns next year, Mimi’s transformation from a young trophy bearer to a global professional stands as a proud symbol of growth, discipline, and the limitless possibilities for African children.
