Bawumia Takes Strong Lead in NPP Flagbearer Race – Survey
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is leading the race to become the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential flagbearer, according to a new survey conducted ahead of the party’s upcoming primaries.
The survey, carried out by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Ghana, shows Dr. Bawumia commanding 69.7% support among NPP delegates, making him the clear favourite. His closest contender, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, garnered 21.3%, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong received 6.6%.
Among the broader public sample, Dr. Bawumia also maintained a significant lead with 50.6%, compared with Mr. Agyapong at 29.8% and Dr. Acheampong at 8.7%, indicating strong confidence in his leadership beyond party delegates.
Political analysts suggest that the survey reflects Dr. Bawumia’s continued popularity within the party and among Ghanaians, positioning him as the likely NPP presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections. They note that his performance in previous elections, experience as Vice President, and active engagement in national economic policy contribute to his current lead.
The NPP is scheduled to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, and party officials have urged delegates to participate actively while adhering to internal democratic processes.
Observers say the survey results will influence campaign strategies, alliances, and grassroots mobilization in the run-up to the primaries, as other aspirants consider ways to boost their support among delegates and party members.
With Dr. Bawumia enjoying such a commanding lead, the NPP appears set for a relatively smooth selection process, although analysts caution that political dynamics can change rapidly as the primaries approach.
