Diplomatic Row Eases as Nigeria Apologises to Burkina Faso Over Military Aircraft Incident

The Nigerian government has formally apologised to Burkina Faso following a diplomatic incident involving a Nigerian military flight that resulted in the detention of 11 Nigerian servicemen.

According to official statements, the incident occurred after a Nigerian military aircraft entered Burkinabè airspace without completing all required diplomatic and security clearances. The aircraft was subsequently intercepted, and the personnel on board were detained by Burkinabè authorities for questioning.

Nigerian officials explained that the flight was part of a legitimate military operation but acknowledged that procedural lapses led to the misunderstanding. The government expressed regret over the incident and reaffirmed its respect for Burkina Faso’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Following diplomatic engagements between the two countries, Nigeria issued a formal apology, paving the way for the release of the detained servicemen. The matter was resolved through dialogue, with both sides emphasizing the importance of cooperation and communication in military operations within the region.

The incident comes at a time when West African countries face shared security challenges, particularly in combating terrorism and cross-border crime. Analysts say the swift diplomatic resolution highlights the need for closer coordination among regional armed forces to avoid similar occurrences in the future.

Nigeria and Burkina Faso have both reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining cordial relations and strengthening security collaboration in the interest of regional stability.
