Growing Youth Entrepreneurship: NYA Pushes Vision for Riders to Become Fleet Owners

The National Youth Authority (NYA) says it is redefining the future of youth employment in Ghana, shifting focus from short-term gig work to long-term business ownership. According to NYA CEO Osman Abdulai Ayariga, the Authority is no longer satisfied with young people remaining riders for digital delivery companies indefinitely the goal is to empower them to become fleet owners and eventually build full courier enterprises.
Ayariga explained that while riding for delivery services offers quick income, it does not create sustainable wealth. The new vision encourages young riders to think beyond daily earnings and begin planning toward owning multiple bikes, employing other riders, and managing structured delivery operations.
He noted that the NYA is engaging private partners, financial institutions, and training bodies to design programmes that will help young people transition from workers to entrepreneurs. These interventions are expected to include affordable financing schemes, business management training, and technical support to scale small courier start-ups.
The initiative comes at a time when Ghana’s delivery and logistics sector is expanding rapidly, driven by e-commerce and urban demand. The NYA believes that positioning young people at the centre of this growth will not only reduce unemployment but also stimulate local enterprise development.
Ayariga reiterated that the Authority’s long-term aim is for riders to move from “just surviving” to building competitive courier companies that can operate on a national scale.
