President Mahama Announces Metropolitan Status for Ho and Hohoe

Ho, Volta Region

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Ho Municipal Assembly and Hohoe Municipal Assembly are set to be upgraded to Metropolitan Assembly status, marking a significant milestone in the administrative and urban development of the Volta Region.

The President made the announcement during a public engagement in Ho, stating that the decision forms part of government’s broader commitment to strengthening decentralisation and promoting balanced regional development. According to him, the rapid population growth and expanding economic activities in both Ho and Hohoe now justify their elevation to metropolitan status.

President Mahama explained that the upgrade will enhance local governance by providing the assemblies with greater administrative authority, improved planning capacity, and increased access to resources for infrastructure and social services.

Metropolitan status is typically reserved for major urban centres and is expected to improve service delivery, boost investment opportunities, and support structured urban development. The move is also anticipated to create new opportunities for employment and private sector participation in the region.

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs is expected to begin the formal processes required to operationalise the upgrade in line with constitutional and legislative requirements.

Residents and stakeholders in Ho and Hohoe have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a positive step toward accelerating development and positioning the two municipalities as key urban centres in the Volta Region.
