Coronavirus, popularly known as Covid-19 sprang up in China in the late 2019 and spread all over the world.
The emergence of this infection brought the world to a standstill as it claimed the lives of millions of people from virtually all continents of the world.
The World Health Organization (WHO) would later declare the Covid-19 virus as a pandemic and issued out directives on how people can keep themselves safe from the deadly virus.
These directives included regular washing of hands with soap under running water, regular wearing of nose masks and avoiding crowded areas.
Indeed these measures proved helpful as several many lives were saved from the grips of the pandemic.
Here in Ghana, the Ghana Health Service (GHS), together with the local media, worked closely with the government through the Ministry of Health (MoH) in the collation of vital information needed to track the movement of the virus while encouraging the citizenry to take full responsibility of their safety as their survival depended on it.
That notwithstanding, a section of Ghanaian still doubted the existence or even the reality of the Covid-19 pandemic. Some alleged that it was nothing but a myth and weapon released by China to get rid of the black race from the face of the earth.
In a survey conducted recently by MultiCDB, some market women shared their views on whether the Covid-19 pandemic was real or not.
"I Have never seen anyone affected with the Covid-19 [virus) before and I think the introduction of the nose masks was to protect ourselves from dust and other harmful substances [in the atmosphere].
"The hand sanitizer too, when you rub it, it’s a chemical that gives us a different effect. I don’t think it protects us from any pandemic because we don’t keep social distance here in the market and non of my fellow market women have ever been affected [by the virus]", one market woman said.
“Even With the vaccine, I was not sick but was forced to go for a jab and I know people who are suffering from taking the Covid-19 vaccine ”, another said.
Others however believed that it was real and claimed that they had seen people said to have died of the Covid-19 virus being buried in the Awudome cemetery in Accra.
“At first I didn’t believe till I came across persons said to have been affected by the virus being buried at Awudome [Cemetery]. Since then, I have been nervous and have been adhering to the preventive measures seriously. Hmmm. It's real", one trader also shared.
