Multiple award winning Ghanaian hip-hop and
hiplife duo Omar Sterling and Mugeez with the stage name R2Bees, recently revealed
in an interview that although awards signify appreciation for good work and
outstanding accomplishments, they do not take much delight in awards.
According to the Afrobeats duo, growing up in
Tema Community 1 Site 15 a suburb of Accra, they encountered numerous struggles
as life did not spare them its herculean process of growth, a reality that
shaped the future they are living today.
They acknowledged the life-changing income they
generate from concerts, endorsement deals, and digital music streaming
platforms which makes them one of the most popular and successful artistes in
Ghana who merit recognitions – a reason for the awards they have won so far.
However, they believe the awards only
symbolize the reaping of that which they have sown hence do not idolize or make
fuss about them for it is an expected result and not a surprise.
The music icons indicated that they are rarely
seen at award events to pick up awards, citing the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA)
which is now Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) as justification to their claim.
In explaining their high sense of humility and
why they do not boast about their great accomplishments, Omar Sterling asserted
that, “Anything that magnifies your ego is going to kill you”.
The talented duo, unlike most Ghanaian
creative arts, is scarcely seen or heard in public “blowing their own trumpet”
yet earned the utmost respect in the music circle and the entertainment
fraternity as a whole.
It is obvious their excellent work is doing
the talking for them.
