Meet Nana Opoku Ampomah I, founder of
UPSA
The University of Professional
Studies, Accra (UPSA), formerly known as the Institute of Professional Studies
(IPS), was established in 1965 by the dedicated educationist, Nana Opoku
Ampomah I, who serves as the paramount chief of Amoafo Bekwai in the Ashanti
region.
Nana Opoku, in his private life, is
known as Joseph Opoku Ampomah. He was born on the 28th of August 1928 in
Bekwai.
He started his basic education at
Bekwai Methodist Mission School. After the acquisition of his Elementary
certificate, Nana Opoku proceeded to the University of Ghana, Legon where he
obtained his Bachelor of Science degree.
Following the completion of his
undergraduate studies, he secured a job as a journalist at Daily Graphic, the
state-owned publishing newspaper.
Nana Opoku later founded the Institute
of Professional Studies (IPS) in 1965 as a private tertiary institution
dedicated to providing academic and professional business education in the
areas of management, accountancy, and other administration-related programmes.
The university was subsequently taken over
by the Government of Ghana in the year 1978 by the Institute of Professional
Studies decree, 1978 (SMCD 200).
The university was later renamed as
University of Professional Studies, Accra having enacted the University of
Professional Studies, Act 2012 (Act 850).
