Meet Nana Opoku Ampomah I, founder of

UPSA

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), formerly known as the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), was established in 1965 by the dedicated educationist, Nana Opoku Ampomah I, who serves as the paramount chief of Amoafo Bekwai in the Ashanti region.

Nana Opoku, in his private life, is known as Joseph Opoku Ampomah. He was born on the 28th of August 1928 in Bekwai.

He started his basic education at Bekwai Methodist Mission School. After the acquisition of his Elementary certificate, Nana Opoku proceeded to the University of Ghana, Legon where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree.

Following the completion of his undergraduate studies, he secured a job as a journalist at Daily Graphic, the state-owned publishing newspaper.

Nana Opoku later founded the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) in 1965 as a private tertiary institution dedicated to providing academic and professional business education in the areas of management, accountancy, and other administration-related programmes.

The university was subsequently taken over by the Government of Ghana in the year 1978 by the Institute of Professional Studies decree, 1978 (SMCD 200).

The university was later renamed as University of Professional Studies, Accra having enacted the University of Professional Studies, Act 2012 (Act 850).
