The Ministry of Communications in Ghana has recently undertaken significant audits of its contracts and frequency authorizations. On February 10, 2025, Communications Minister Sam Dr George directed the Auditor-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA) to conduct an audit of all frequency authorizations issued over the past 60 days.
This directive is part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and accountability within the communications sector. The NCA's National Frequency Allocation Table (NFAT) outlines the usage of various frequency bands in Ghana, providing a framework for frequency assignments across radio services.
In addition to the frequency authorizations audit, the Ministry is revisiting the controversial $89 million contract with Kelni GVG, a Haitian firm. This contract, awarded in 2017, aimed to monitor telecommunications traffic and ensure revenue assurance for the government. The deal has faced criticism over its cost and implementation. Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, has alleged that the Ministry has been paying $1.5 million monthly to Kelni GVG since 2018, despite concerns about the contract's effectiveness.
The Ministry's recent actions reflect a commitment to scrutinize and improve the management of contracts and frequency allocations, addressing public concerns and striving for greater efficiency in the communications sector.
