In a moment that reflects Ghana’s growing commitment to inclusive education and community development, 61 students with hearing and visual impairments are currently writing the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Eastern Region.
These students come from various special education institutions and include 44 hearing-impaired candidates—26 males and 18 females—as well as 17 visually impaired candidates, made up of 10 males and 7 females. Their participation in this year’s BECE is more than an academic milestone; it is a strong message of visibility, inclusion, and equal opportunity.
Support from caregivers, teachers, and local educational authorities has been crucial. With provisions such as braille reading materials, large-print question papers, and sign language interpreters, these young individuals are being empowered to write the same exams as their peers across the country.
This year’s participation highlights the value of creating systems that embrace difference and promote equity. For communities across the Eastern Region—and Ghana as a whole—this moment represents progress. It is the outcome of years of advocacy, training, and collaborative efforts between education stakeholders and special needs institutions.
Beyond the Classroom: A Social Shift
Education for children with disabilities has often been met with barriers—limited access, social stigma, and infrastructural challenges. However, the ongoing presence of these 61 candidates in a national exam is helping reshape public perception. Families, local communities, and schools are beginning to see the capabilities and potential of students living with disabilities, not just their limitations.
This collective shift reflects a broader social responsibility: to ensure no one is left behind in national development. Community-based support and awareness continue to play a central role in this transformation, reminding society that inclusion is not charity—it is a right.
