Accra, Ghana – June 12, 2025 — The Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed strong reservations over recent pronouncements suggesting clemency may be extended to unauthorized radio stations operating across the country.
Addressing the media in Parliament on Thursday, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need for the state to uphold regulatory standards in the broadcasting space rather than compromising enforcement in the name of political goodwill.
“We cannot continue to encourage a culture of impunity under the guise of clemency. If a station has violated the law, due process must follow. Anything short of that sets a dangerous precedent,” he stated.
The Minority Leader’s comments follow recent indications from officials within the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Ministry of Information hinting at a possible review of penalties meted out to non-compliant media houses. While details remain unclear, the announcement has sparked debate among stakeholders in Ghana’s media industry, with many questioning the criteria for such leniency.
Afenyo-Markin, known for his firm stance on governance and constitutional integrity, argued that media freedom must coexist with responsibility and accountability. He warned that allowing illegal operators to continue unchecked would erode the credibility of licensed broadcasters and undermine the rule of law.
“Our democracy is built on transparency and responsibility. Media institutions have a duty to operate within the legal framework. Let us not politicize the enforcement of our laws,” he added.
Ghana’s media landscape has long been celebrated as one of the most vibrant in Africa. However, concerns about unregulated radio stations, particularly in rural regions, continue to pose a challenge to media oversight. The NCA has previously shut down dozens of stations for operating without valid licenses or failing to meet compliance requirements.
As discussions around potential clemency evolve, civil society organizations and media watchdogs are calling for a balanced approach that encourages regularization without compromising the integrity of regulatory institutions.
