Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin Apologises to Deputy Health Minister-Designate Over Controversial Comment

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has issued a public apology to Hon. Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah, the Deputy Health Minister-designate and Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, following a controversial remark he made regarding her nomination.

During a vetting session before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee yesterday, Mr. Afenyo-Markin openly expressed regret for his earlier comments on the floor of Parliament, which questioned the rationale behind Dr. Ayensu Danquah’s appointment.

The Minority Leader’s earlier remarks were interpreted as suggesting that her nomination was based on favoritism rather than merit, comparing her selection to that of her fellow female colleague, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, who was also seen as a qualified contender for the role.

“I acknowledge that my comments may have caused offense and unintended embarrassment to Hon. Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah. I sincerely apologise and withdraw those remarks,” Afenyo-Markin said during the vetting session.

Dr. Ayensu Danquah, a renowned medical practitioner and academic, has received widespread commendation for her professional achievements and commitment to public health. Her nomination as Deputy Health Minister has been largely celebrated by constituents of Essikado-Ketan and beyond.

The apology is expected to ease tensions and restore decorum as Parliament continues with the vetting of ministerial nominees.
