President Mahama Cancels Fuel Allowances for Political Appointees to Cut Government Spending

Accra, July 15, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate cancellation of all fuel allowances and fuel allocations to political appointees, as part of new measures to curb government expenditure.

The directive, which takes effect immediately, affects ministers, deputy ministers, metropolitan and district chief executives (MMDCEs), and other senior political appointees who currently benefit from state-funded fuel provisions.

> “This decision is in line with ongoing efforts to cut costs and ensure prudent use of public resources,” a statement from the Presidency noted.

Part of Broader Cost-Cutting Measures

The cancellation forms part of a broader fiscal strategy aimed at reducing non-essential government spending and improving overall economic management. It comes amid renewed calls for financial discipline across all levels of government as Ghana works toward economic stabilization and long-term sustainability.

President Mahama’s directive is expected to save the state millions of cedis annually and signals a commitment to lead by example in implementing austerity measures.

Implementation and Compliance

The Office of the Chief of Staff has been tasked with ensuring full compliance with the directive across all ministries, departments, and agencies. The Presidency emphasized that further steps to streamline government operations and reduce wasteful spending will follow in the coming weeks.

This move is expected to resonate with the public, many of whom have called for a more responsible and accountable approach to managing public finances.
