Deputy Health Minister Nominee and Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan constituency, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah, has made a passionate appeal on the floor of Parliament for the urgent passage of the Mahama Care Bill, also known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill.
Addressing lawmakers on Monday, July 21, Prof. Dr. Grace underscored the bill’s importance as a major step toward addressing the growing health needs of Ghanaians, particularly those battling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer.
“This is not just a bill—it is a life-saving intervention,” she declared. “The Ghana Medical Trust Fund will significantly ease the financial burden of many families across the country who are currently struggling to afford long-term medical care.”
The initiative, a key component of President John Dramani Mahama’s healthcare promise, seeks to provide sustainable funding for the treatment and support of Ghanaians suffering from chronic and costly health conditions.
The Mahama Care Bill has been widely lauded by public health advocates and civil society groups who say the legislation could transform access to medical care for thousands of vulnerable Ghanaians.
If passed, the bill is expected to establish a national trust fund dedicated to subsidizing treatment, supporting early diagnosis initiatives, and promoting public awareness around non-communicable diseases.
The debate on the bill is expected to continue later.
