Mahama: “It’s Premature to Call for Closure of the OSP”

Former President John Dramani Mahama has pushed back against growing public calls demanding the shutdown of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), insisting that such demands are “premature and unhelpful” at a time when Ghana is still strengthening its anti-corruption systems.

Mahama emphasized that although the OSP has faced operational hurdles and public criticism, its mandate remains crucial to enhancing accountability, fighting corruption, and restoring public trust in state institutions. According to him, rather than scrapping the office, what is needed is stronger political will, better resourcing, and a renewed commitment to independence.

He argued that every young institution faces challenges and that dismantling the OSP now would only derail Ghana’s long-term efforts to build credible and impartial mechanisms for investigating corruption.

Mahama’s remarks come amid intensified national debate following recent high-profile cases, delayed investigations, and concerns about the office’s effectiveness. Civil society organizations, however, continue to insist that with proper reforms and adequate support, the OSP can still fulfill its core mandate.

The conversation reflects a broader public frustration with corruption and rising expectations for accountability across all sectors of government.
