UNFPA Boosts Ghana’s Maternal Health with GHS 40 Million Support

The Ministry of Health has received a major boost to strengthen midwifery education and reproductive health services, thanks to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The support includes MEPCEP training equipment, advanced simulation models, and essential family planning commodities.

Valued at nearly GHS 40 million, this initiative forms part of UNFPA’s long-standing partnership with Ghana to improve maternal health outcomes.

Speaking at the handover, UNFPA Country Representative Dr. Wilfred Ochan highlighted that the investment will enhance practical training for midwives, expand access to family planning services, and contribute to reducing maternal mortality across the country. He further noted that over one million couples have benefitted from UNFPA-supplied contraceptives this year alone, helping prevent unintended pregnancies and saving hundreds of lives.

Receiving the equipment, Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, expressed gratitude to UNFPA for its continued support. She emphasized that the resources will significantly elevate the quality of midwifery training nationwide.

Prof. Ayensu-Danquah stressed that beneficiary institutions are expected to use the equipment strictly for skills development and uphold rigorous accountability standards. She added that the investments will help build a stronger midwifery workforce and improve care for mothers and newborns as Ghana advances toward universal health coverage.

This latest support from UNFPA underscores the global commitment to maternal and reproductive health in Ghana, ensuring that both mothers and families receive the care and guidance they need.
