Biography of Joseph Casely Hayford
Joseph Ephraim Casely Hayford was one of the outstanding nationalist leaders in Gold Coast.
He was born on 29th September,1866 in Cape Coast in the central region of Ghana
Hayford started his basic education in Cape Coast and later went to Mfantsipim Senior High school
He later went to Fourah Bay College in Freetown, Sierra Leone
He picked his nationalist ideas in Sierra Leone at early stages in his tertiary education
He stated his career in life as a journalist in 1885,as an assistant Editor on the Western Echo and also became the editor of Gold Coast Echo from 1888 to 1890.
Hayford became a teacher and furthered to become headmaster of Wesleyan High school in Cape Coast.
He later saw the knowledge of law as an important asset in promoting his political aspirations ,he studied law at St Peter’s College for two years
He was called to the Bar in the year 1896. As a lawyer-Politician , Hayford successfully argued and agitated against the Land Bill of 1911 which was introduced by the colonial government
As an Nationalist,he founded the First inter territorial movement in the British West Africa that is National Congress for British West Africa (NCBWA) which aims was to abolish racial discrimination among others
In March 1920 he succeeded in convening a conference in Accra of 50 British West African delegates which brought the NCBWA
He died on August 11,1930
