2024 BECE Candidates To Write 3 New Subjects
The West
African Examination Council (WAEC) has added three new subjects to the existing
subject list for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to
be written by final-year Junior High School (JHS) students in the country.
The new
subjects are; Career Technology, Creative Art and Design, and Arabic. Career
Technology and Creative Art and Design were derived from the already existing
subject Basic Design and Technology ( BDT) .
However,
Arabic will be an optional subject specifically for students in Islamic schools
while Basic Design and Career Technology will be mandatory for all the
candidates.
Due to the
introduction of the new subjects, this year's examination will span a period of
six days other than the regular five days. It will commence on Monday, July 8, and
end on Monday, July 15, 2024.
According
to the Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, John Kapi, new subjects could be introduced
any time since it was an examination that was solely Ghanaian, and that it reflects
the government's priority and preference.
Mr. Kapi
further explained that Arabic has been included to help students seeking
certification in the language.
As the
registration of candidates concluded, WAEC is now organizing the breakdown of
the subjects to be written. English Language, and Religious and Moral Education
(RME) are scheduled to be the first papers to be written as BECE kickstarts on
Monday, July 8.
Meanwhile,
WAEC had sent sample questions to schools and also posted on its website.
The Basic
Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is a regular examination written by
final-year students in Junior High Schools
(JHS) looking forward to gain admission into Senior High Schools (SHS) for
their second cycle education.
