Nkoranza: God's Way Senior High School holds SRC elections In a Grand Style
Students at God's Way Senior High School have for the first time in history elected their Senior Prefects to constitute the school’s Students Representative Council (SRC) using the official electoral processes.
The election which was conducted on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, saw a record high participation of students in the democratic exercise as they took turns to vote for their preferred candidates vying for the various portfolios.
With the help of both students and staff playing roles of EC Officials during the electoral process, the students gained their first practical experience in the various stages of voter-validation during an election.
Acting as an Electoral Officer for the issuance of ballot papers to the students to cast their vote, the Assistant Headmaster of the school, Mr. Godwin Ampofo says the initiative is aimed at training the students to be democratically conscious to play critical roles in society as good citizens.
According to Mr. Ampofo, this year's SRC election was one of the many efforts by the school to develop leadership skills, inculcate electoral discipline, create a sense of democratic awareness among students, and prepare them for future events at any level as the 2024 general election fast approaches.
"There are many students who have never voted in an organized elections before hence taking the opportunity to use the electoral processes to educate them on how to use ballot papers and other processes of voting", he stated.
At the end of the polls, a total of 164 ballot were recorded which accounted for the position of Boys, Girls, Compound Overseer, Prep, Dormitory, Entertainment, Dispensary, Protocol and Sports Prefects respectively.
Following the official declarations by the school’s Electoral Committee led by Mr. Ampofo, Samuel Nana Obeng Manu, with 62 votes out of the 134 total valid votes, emerged as the Boys Prefect, and Princess Anokyewaa, with 58 votes of the total valid votes cast emerged as the Girls Prefect of God's Way Senior High School for the next academic year.
The Assistant Headmaster, Mr. Godwin Ampofo said the election was an all-inclusive exercise, and that neither of the students was disenfranchised.
"From the time of selecting the students, to the campaigning processes leading to voting and ballot counting to final announcement, the students were given an opportunity to fully experience a free and fair election", he disclosed.
"The entire experience will not only prepare their minds for future endeavours, but will also etched in their minds in a sense of a right of choice", he added.
The Boys Prefect-elect, Samuel Nana Obeng Manu on behalf of the contestants, prefects-elect, and the entire student populace expressed their profound gratitude to the school’s administration for the educative exercise.
As Ghana readies to hit the polls for her ninth democratic elections in December this year with the update of the country’s voters register already underway, the SRC elections will equip first-time voters in the school with the knowledge about electoral processes which will go a long way to cut down on voting anomaly such as rejected ballot.
