Former South Korean international footballer Hwang Ui-jo has been sentenced to a one-year prison term, suspended for two years, after being convicted of secretly filming sexual encounters with a woman without her consent. The Seoul Central District Court emphasized the severity of the crime, noting the significant social harm caused by such illegal filming. However, the court considered Hwang's expression of remorse and the fact that the videos had been shared on social media by a third party, leading to a reduced sentence.
Hwang, aged 32, has had a varied football career. He joined Nottingham Forest in 2022 but did not make any appearances for the Premier League club, spending time on loan at Norwich City and Turkish club Alanyaspor. His contract with Alanyaspor is set to expire this summer.
The case has attracted significant media attention, highlighting the issue of non-consensual filming and its legal consequences in South Korea. Hwang's conviction serves as a reminder of the serious legal repercussions associated with such offenses.
