National Security Intercepts Cooking Oil Smuggling Operation Involving Over 6,000 Drums

Accra, Ghana – In a major anti-smuggling operation, National Security operatives have intercepted three articulator trucks, each carrying 2,129 drums of cooking oil, in what is suspected to be a large-scale tax evasion scheme.

The seizure, which occurred at an undisclosed location, is part of a broader national crackdown on smuggling and revenue leakages affecting the country’s economy. According to sources within the National Security Secretariat, the intercepted cargo was being transported without proper documentation, raising strong suspicions of an attempt to evade import duties and taxes.

In total, 6,387 drums of cooking oil were being transported—well above quantities typically associated with retail or local distribution. Preliminary investigations suggest that the consignment may have been smuggled into the country through unapproved routes before being moved inland for sale on the open market.

“This operation forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal trade and protect the nation’s revenue base,” a National Security official stated. “Tax evasion on this scale undermines government efforts to fund critical sectors like health, education, and infrastructure.”

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been notified and is expected to take over the investigation, which could include tracing the origins of the goods, identifying the intended recipients, and calculating potential tax losses to the state.

This interception adds to a growing list of recent enforcement actions targeting organized smuggling networks dealing in petroleum products, textiles, rice, and other high-demand commodities.
