Former GIIF CEO Solomon Asamoah Granted Bail in $2M Sky Train Case

Accra, Ghana – The former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Mr. Solomon Asamoah, has been granted bail following his arrest and arraignment in connection with the controversial $2 million Sky Train project.

Mr. Asamoah appeared before an Accra High Court on Wednesday, June 4, where prosecutors outlined charges related to financial impropriety and alleged mismanagement of public funds tied to the now-stalled Sky Train initiative. The court granted bail in the sum of GH₵5 million with two sureties, one to be justified.

Background: The Sky Train Controversy

The Sky Train project, announced with much fanfare in 2019, aimed to revolutionize Ghana’s urban transport system through a futuristic, elevated railway network in Accra. However, despite the GIIF investing $2 million in feasibility and preparatory works, the project never took off, leading to rising concerns about wasteful spending and due diligence failures.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which has been investigating the matter since 2023, alleges that the investment was made without proper safeguards, and in the absence of a clear implementation path or binding agreement with key stakeholders.

Legal Team Responds

Mr. Asamoah’s legal counsel maintains that their client acted within the scope of his professional duties and insists that the funds were used for legitimate feasibility activities under government directive.

“Our client has always been transparent in his dealings and looks forward to clearing his name,” said lead counsel, Nana Kwame Bediako.

Public Concern and Political Reactions

The case has sparked renewed public scrutiny over major infrastructure projects and the accountability of state agencies entrusted with strategic national investments. Youth advocacy groups and policy analysts are calling for broader investigations into similar high-profile but unexecuted deals.

Political figures across the aisle have weighed in, with opposition voices demanding a full audit into the activities of GIIF during Mr. Asamoah’s tenure, while others urge caution and due process.

What’s Next?

The case has been adjourned to July 15, 2025, for continuation. Meanwhile, the Special Prosecutor’s Office is expected to call additional witnesses and present financial audit reports as evidence.
