Japan has reiterated its strong commitment to supporting the construction of the Volivo Bridge over the Volta Lake, a pivotal component of Ghana’s Eastern Corridor road project. This assurance was conveyed by Miyazaki Katsura, Senior Executive Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), during a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
The proposed Volivo Bridge is integral to President Mahama’s ambitious $10 billion “Big Push” infrastructure initiative, which aims to invest $2 billion annually over five years in critical sectors such as roads, bridges, education, and healthcare. The bridge is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between northern and southern Ghana, thereby boosting trade and economic development in the region.
“We are happy that the Volivo Bridge project is captured under the Big Push initiative,” Katsura stated, assuring President Mahama of JICA’s commitment to facilitate further discussions with the Japanese government. He also revealed that a technical team would be dispatched to Ghana to assess the additional funding required for the project.
President Mahama had previously secured Japan’s agreement to fund the bridge during a visit to Tokyo in his earlier term as President. The renewed engagement underscores Japan’s sustained support for Ghana’s infrastructure development.
In addition, President Mahama has accepted an invitation to attend the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in August. He indicated that he would use the platform to deepen bilateral cooperation and secure the necessary resources to commence construction of the bridge.
The Volivo Bridge project is seen as a transformative development that will not only complete the Eastern Corridor road network but also enhance trade and integration within the region. The Eastern Corridor represents the National Trunk Road No.2 in Ghana’s trunk road network, stretching from Tema in the south to Kulungugu on the northeastern border with Burkina Faso. The corridor is of strategic importance, especially for freight movement within Ghana and neighboring land-locked countries.
