The Alliance of Feminist Civil Society Organisations (AFCSOs) has issued a scathing press statement condemning what it describes as the "reprehensible conduct" of Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin towards Member of Parliament Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah during parliamentary proceedings.
According to the AFCSOs, Afenyo-Markin publicly undermined Dr. Ayensu-Danquah’s contribution to an ongoing debate in Parliament, dismissing her as a “strange” nominee following her appointment by the President as Deputy Minister for Health.
The alliance characterized the Minority Leader's remarks as a blatant display of gender bias and disrespect, stating: "This kind of behavior is not only unacceptable but deeply entrenched in the systemic silencing and belittling of women in politics."
AFCSOs called on Parliament to uphold standards of decorum and mutual respect, urging leadership across the political divide to foster an environment where all MPs—especially women—can perform their duties without fear of ridicule or intimidation.
“The nomination of Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, a seasoned medical practitioner and public servant, should be celebrated—not questioned with dismissive language,” the statement added.
The alliance further demanded a public apology from Afenyo-Markin and called on Parliament’s leadership to take concrete steps to address gendered conduct within the House.
As of this publication, Hon. Afenyo-Markin has not issued a response to the statement.
