Mahama Approves Two-Year Contract Extension for IGP Yohuno

President John Dramani Mahama has approved a two-year contract extension for Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, allowing him to remain in office beyond his statutory retirement in December 2025.

The approval, confirmed in an official letter signed by the Secretary to the President, follows a formal recommendation from the Police Council. The Council advised that retaining the IGP would ensure continuity in security sector reforms and maintain stability ahead of upcoming national programmes and policing priorities.

The extension means IGP Yohuno will continue leading the Ghana Police Service into 2027, overseeing ongoing operational restructuring, personnel welfare initiatives, and modernization efforts.

Government sources indicate that the decision was influenced by the IGP’s performance, his role in strengthening law enforcement operations, and the need to avoid leadership vacuum within the Service.

The Police Council’s recommendation and the President’s approval are expected to be communicated officially to the Interior Ministry and relevant security agencies in the coming days.
