Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is widely recognized not only as Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady but also as a tireless advocate for women’s empowerment and social justice.

Recently, Ghana’s Tourism Minister Dzifa Gomashie highlighted one of her landmark contributions: her pivotal role in ensuring the Intestate Succession Law (PNDCL 111) was effectively implemented across Ghana.

“Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings fought hard for the Interstate Succession Law to be implemented,” said Minister Gomashie.

This law, which governs inheritance when a person dies without a will, is particularly important for protecting widows and children, ensuring equitable distribution of property and preventing exploitation of vulnerable family members.

A Legacy of Advocacy

Through her leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement, Nana Konadu tirelessly campaigned for legal reforms, education, and awareness programs, empowering women to claim their rights and gain economic independence.

Her efforts extended beyond legislation she ensured that women at the grassroots level could access legal information, support systems, and resources to enforce the law in their communities.

Impact on Ghanaian Society

Thanks to her advocacy, countless women across Ghana have benefited from fair treatment in inheritance matters, and the law has become a critical tool in advancing gender equality. Nana Konadu’s work laid the foundation for modern legal protections that continue to safeguard women’s rights today.

Her enduring commitment reminds Ghanaians that leadership is not just about titles, but about using influence to transform lives and protect the vulnerable.
