ECOWAS Calls for Renewed Dialogue With Mali Amid Prolonged Transition

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has renewed calls for sustained dialogue with Mali’s transitional authorities as the country continues its extended transition to civilian rule.

In a statement issued following recent regional consultations, ECOWAS urged Malian authorities to prioritise inclusive political dialogue, respect regional commitments, and provide clearer timelines toward democratic governance.

Mali has been under military-led transition since coups in 2020 and 2021, developments that strained relations with ECOWAS and led to sanctions, some of which were later lifted after negotiations.

Despite progress in diplomatic engagement, concerns remain over delays in elections, governance reforms, and the humanitarian impact of ongoing insecurity in parts of the country.

Mali’s government maintains that reforms must be completed to ensure lasting stability before elections are held, citing persistent security threats posed by armed groups operating across the Sahel.

Analysts say Mali’s political trajectory remains critical to regional stability, as developments in the country continue to influence security and economic conditions across West Africa.
