President Mahama Honoured With Prestigious Yoruba Chieftaincy Title in Nigeria
Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has been honoured with the Yoruba chieftaincy title “Aare Atayeto Oodua” by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in recognition of his leadership and contributions to African unity.
The ceremony, held in Ife, Nigeria, highlighted President Mahama’s longstanding commitment to fostering continental cooperation, diplomacy, and cultural ties between Ghana, Nigeria, and the wider African community.
Speaking at the event, the Ooni of Ife praised President Mahama for his role in promoting peace, integration, and African solidarity, emphasizing that the title is reserved for individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership and service to the African continent.
President Mahama’s personal connection to Nigeria adds special significance to the honour. He spent part of his youth in Offa, Nigeria, where he was raised by his Nigerian stepmother during challenging periods in Ghana. This early exposure to Nigerian culture and society helped shape his pan-African outlook and lifelong commitment to strengthening African ties.
Receiving the chieftaincy title marks a historic moment, reflecting both President Mahama’s diplomatic achievements and his enduring cultural and familial connections with Nigeria.
