If the government won’t employ us, we’ll respond at the ballot box - Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association

The Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association (GUNMA) is raising its strongest alarm yet, warning that the government’s continued refusal to post trained health professionals is pushing thousands of graduates into frustration  and could influence how they vote in the next elections.

Speaking with a firm, emotional tone, leaders of the association stressed that after years of training, licensing, and fulfilling all national requirements, they still remain at home while hospitals and clinics across the country struggle with staff shortages. According to GUNMA, this year has been particularly difficult, with many graduates crossing the two-year mark since completion without any posting.

They argue that the unemployment crisis in the health sector is no longer just an economic burden but a matter of national security and public health. Communities are increasingly underserved, nurses are burning out, and new graduates are losing hope.“If the government won’t employ us, we’ll respond at the ballot box,” the association stated, emphasizing that their patience has run out and their civic power remains their last tool for accountability

The group accused authorities of making repeated promises without action, especially during peak political seasons, only to abandon graduates immediately after elections. They insist that the country must prioritize health care staffing instead of leaving qualified professionals idle.

GUNMA is demanding:

  • Immediate clearance for postings
  • A transparent recruitment calendar
  • An end to political delays affecting health employment
  • Long-term workforce planning to prevent recurring backlogs

As pressure mounts, the association says it will continue peaceful advocacy but will not hesitate to mobilize members nationwide if government response continues to stall.

For thousands of trained nurses and midwives waiting to serve, this is no longer just a policy failure  it is a personal and national fight for dignity, opportunity, and fairness.
