"Prioritise Economic Progress Over Historical Debates" - Engineer Charles Kwesi Taylor
Engineer Charles Kwesi Taylor, leader of the "50+1" pressure group, has criticised President Akuffo Addo's focus on revising Ghana's history instead of addressing the country's economic challenges.
In a recent interview with DL FM's Okogyeabour Ocran, Taylor emphasised that the president should channel his energy towards improving the economy, as "human beings don't eat history."
He expressed concern over the president's attempts to discredit Kwame Nkrumah's legacy and achievements, particularly his role as the founder of the Republic of Ghana.
Taylor accused the president of masterminding a campaign to tarnish Nkrumah's image, citing Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh's comments during his unveiling ceremony as the party's running mate in Kumasi.
He argued that if the president did not support these comments, he should have reprimanded Dr. Prempeh, but his silence implies a deliberate attempt to undermine Nkrumah's legacy.
Furthermore, Taylor urged Ghanaians to reject the president's efforts to introduce unrecognized figures like J.B. Danquah and Ofori Atta into Ghana's proud history and heritage.
He also expressed disappointment in the country's chiefs for remaining silent while the history of Ghana is being altered for political gain, highlighting their significant roles in the past, such as leading the signing of the Bond of 1844, which led to the total emancipation of the people.
Taylor's comments come in response to President Akuffo Addo's recent live telecast, where he disputed Kwame Nkrumah's status as the founder of the Republic of Ghana. The debate has sparked a national conversation about Ghana's history, legacy, and economic priorities.
