Kasoa, Ghana – May 29, 2025 — Tensions flared in the Kasoa Central Business District (CBD) on Thursday as a decongestion exercise led by the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly’s task force turned violent, leaving five individuals injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation erupted when some traders resisted attempts by the task force to clear unauthorized structures and relocate stalls obstructing pedestrian walkways and access roads. What began as verbal exchanges quickly escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in injuries to both traders and task force members.
Emergency medical teams responded swiftly, and the injured individuals were transported to nearby health facilities for treatment. None of the injuries have been reported as life-threatening.

The Municipal Assembly has defended the exercise, stating it was part of a broader effort to enforce sanitation by-laws and restore order within the increasingly congested market area. However, some traders have expressed frustration, accusing the Assembly of heavy-handedness and failing to provide adequate notice or alternative trading spaces.
Security has since been reinforced in the area to prevent further clashes, while local authorities have called for calm and cooperation.
The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly is expected to issue an official statement addressing the incident and outlining the next steps in its decongestion plan.
