The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to embark on a massive disconnection exercise targeting Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), as well as residential, industrial, and commercial customers who owe electricity bills.
According to ECG, the decision is part of efforts to recover millions of cedis in unpaid electricity bills owed by various categories of customers across the country. The company says the non-payment of bills continues to strain its operations and affect its ability to deliver consistent power supply.
All customers in arrears are advised to settle their bills immediately or face disconnection. The exercise is expected to be rolled out in phases and will cover both government institutions and private entities, including households and businesses.
ECG emphasized that the move is not targeted at any specific group but is aimed at improving revenue collection and ensuring operational sustainability. Customers have also been encouraged to visit ECG offices or use online platforms to verify and clear their outstanding balances.
The company has assured the public that reconnection will be done swiftly once debts are settled, but insists that no exemptions will be made during the enforcement.
