President John Dramani Mahama has officially announced that Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy policy will take effect from July 1, 2025, starting with the designation of the Tema and Takoradi ports as 24-hour operational facilities.
The initiative is a key part of the government’s broader strategy to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and boost productivity across critical sectors of the economy. By keeping major entry points like the seaports running day and night, the government aims to reduce congestion, improve trade efficiency, and enhance investor confidence.
President Mahama made the announcement during a national policy briefing, stating that the shift to a 24-hour economy is long overdue and necessary for Ghana’s future.
He noted that various sectors — including transport, manufacturing, health, energy, and logistics — will gradually be integrated into the round-the-clock economy to unlock their full potential and drive economic resilience.
Businesses and workers in the designated sectors will receive policy support, infrastructure upgrades, and security enhancements to make the transition smooth and sustainable.
The Tema and Takoradi Ports, which handle a significant portion of Ghana’s import and export activity, will lead the implementation phase, with expanded shifts, increased staffing, and improved night-time operations.
The announcement has been met with optimism from many in the private sector, though labor unions and trade groups are expected to weigh in on implementation strategies in the coming weeks.
