GRNMA Strike: “You Can’t Force the Employer to Pay You” – Austin Gamey

Labour expert Austin Gamey has weighed in on the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), cautioning that workers cannot compel the government to meet their demands through forceful action.

Speaking in a media interview, Gamey stated, “You can’t force the employer to pay you. There must be mutual understanding and proper negotiations that lead to legally binding agreements.”

The GRNMA declared an indefinite strike over the government’s failure to approve their proposed Conditions of Service, which they claim were submitted months ago. The strike has already begun to impact public health facilities across the country, drawing concern from citizens and healthcare officials.

Gamey urged both parties to return to the negotiating table, warning that prolonged strikes in the healthcare sector pose serious risks to lives and public safety.

He emphasized that while workers have the right to protest, the law also protects employers — particularly the state — from being forced into decisions that bypass due process.

The government, through the National Labour Commission (NLC), has already secured a court injunction ordering the nurses and midwives to return to work. However, compliance has been low, with GRNMA leaders demanding concrete commitments before they end the strike.
