Nurses and Midwives Pay Out-of-Pocket for Work-Related Accidents – GRNMA Chairman Cries Out

By MulticdbOnline | June 11, 2025

Jefferson Asare Danquah, Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA), has raised serious concerns about the lack of support for health workers who suffer accidents while on duty.

Speaking during a recent interview, Mr. Danquah revealed that nurses and midwives who get injured on their way to or from work have to bear the full cost of treatment themselves, with little to no institutional support.

“When a nurse or midwife goes on normal duty and gets into an accident, they bear the cost,”

💬 A Call for Better Conditions

The GRNMA Chairman called this reality unfair and demoralizing, especially considering the sacrifices health workers make on a daily basis — including night shifts, long hours, and life-threatening environments.

He stressed that the Association has repeatedly called on the government to include such risks under occupational safety and insurance policies, but no concrete action has been taken.

🏥 The Bigger Picture

This concern is just one of many being raised by nurses and midwives across the country, as tensions continue over delays in salaries, lack of protective equipment, and stalled negotiations on conditions of service.

The statement from Mr. Danquah comes amid ongoing strike actions in some regions, where health workers say they feel undervalued and unsupported by the very system they keep running.
