The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has expressed dissatisfaction over the Transport Ministry’s unilateral decision to announce a reduction in transport fares without prior consultation.
Speaking to the media, the union’s Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Abass Imoro, said the Ministry failed to engage key stakeholders — especially those directly impacted by the change — before making the announcement.
“We were not engaged at all. This is not how things are supposed to be done,” Alhaji Imoro stated. “We expected the Ministry to sit down with us, like they have in the past, to discuss fare reviews based on economic realities.”
He emphasized that the GPRTU is not against reducing fares, but believes any such move must be backed by proper consultation, especially given the rising cost of fuel, spare parts, and maintenance affecting commercial drivers.
Alhaji Imoro noted that the union is still awaiting official communication from the Ministry regarding the announced changes and hopes for more respectful collaboration in the future.
“Drivers are already struggling. We deserve to be part of these conversations,” he added.
