Australia’s Oldest Man, Alfred “Alfie” Date, Leaves a Legacy of Kindness Through Penguin Rescue Effort

Alfred “Alfie” Date  Australia’s oldest man until his passing at age 110 spent his final years doing something extraordinary: knitting tiny wool sweaters for Little Penguins recovering from an oil spill on Phillip Island.

When the Penguin Foundation called for volunteers to create protective jumpers for affected penguins, Alfie stepped forward with over 80 years of knitting experience. His carefully crafted sweaters played a vital role in keeping the birds safe. The knitwear prevented penguins from ingesting toxic oil while their feathers healed  a simple but life-saving intervention.

The project not only helped rehabilitate countless penguins but also sparked global admiration, inspiring people around the world to contribute to wildlife rescue initiatives.

Alfie Date passed away peacefully in 2016, but his compassion continues to resonate. His story stands as a beautiful reminder that small acts of kindness can make a big difference  no matter your age.
