Kufuor Says 24-Hour Economy Policy ‘Might Work’ If Ghana Fixes Key Structural Gaps

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has offered a measured endorsement of the proposed 24-hour economy policy, saying the initiative might work but only if Ghana first strengthens the critical systems required to sustain it.

Speaking during a recent public engagement, Kufuor explained that the idea of running essential sectors of the economy around the clock is not new and has proven successful in several advanced countries. However, he stressed that those nations only thrive because their foundations are solid.

Kufuor noted that for Ghana to implement a functional 24-hour economy, government must ensure:

  • Stable and affordable power supply to keep industries and services running continuously
  • Reliable security systems to protect night-shift workers and businesses
  • Improved transportation networks to support movement at all hours
  • A well-trained workforce prepared for shift-based employment
  • Supportive business policies that encourage private sector participation

He cautioned that without these essentials, the policy could become difficult to implement effectively, regardless of how ambitious it may sound.

According to Kufuor, the concept has the potential to create jobs, increase national productivity, and expand Ghana’s competitiveness. But he emphasized that its success will depend on disciplined planning, bipartisan support, and strategic investment across key sectors.

The former President concluded that if the right conditions are created, the 24-hour economy could become a transformative step in Ghana’s development journey.
