His nomination was made in accordance with Article 144(1) of the Constitution and subsequently approved by Parliament on November 13, 2025, with a decisive majority of 163 votes to 69.

In his remarks, President Mahama praised the new Chief Justice’s long service, integrity, and deep experience in Ghana’s judicial system. He emphasized the pivotal role of the judiciary in strengthening democracy, upholding justice, and protecting rights.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, prior to this appointment, served as a Justice of the Supreme Court and has been widely regarded as a fair, principled, and scholarly voice on the bench. His leadership now comes at a time when public confidence in institutions is being tested, and judicial independence remains central to national stability.

In his acceptance speech, the newly sworn-in Chief Justice pledged his commitment to the rule of law, timely justice delivery, and continued reforms to make the courts more accessible to all Ghanaians.
