Mahama: “The Time Has Come to Decentralize the Accountant-General’s Department”
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his administration will move to decentralize the Accountant-General’s Department, a reform he says is long overdue to improve efficiency and accountability in public financial management.
According to the President, centralizing all core financial operations in Accra has created bottlenecks that slow down service delivery, delay payments, and limit oversight at the local level.
Decentralization, he noted, will allow regional and district offices to manage financial processes more effectively while strengthening transparency.
Mahama emphasized that the reform is part of a broader plan to modernize Ghana’s public sector and enhance fiscal discipline across all government agencies.
“We must bring financial management closer to the people,” he said, stressing that decentralization will support timely auditing, faster payment systems, and improved monitoring of public funds.
As discussions begin, many analysts believe the move could significantly transform how government finances are managed across the country.
