Only 200 out of 700 Registered Private Security Companies Are in Good Standing – COP Daniel Afriyie

The Ghana Police Service has revealed a worrying trend in the private security sector, with only 200 out of 700 registered private security companies currently operating in good standing. The disclosure was made by COP Daniel Kwame Afriyie, highlighting concerns about compliance and regulation in the industry.

“Good standing” refers to companies that have renewed their licenses, met regulatory requirements, and are officially recognized to operate by the police service. The revelation implies that over 500 private security firms are either non-compliant, unlicensed, or operating irregularly, posing potential risks to clients and the public.

COP Afriyie emphasized the need for strict enforcement of regulations to ensure that only qualified and licensed security providers operate in Ghana. He called on businesses and individuals to verify the status of security companies before engaging their services.

The private security sector plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order, especially in urban areas, commercial centers, and private estates. However, the proliferation of unregulated firms has raised concerns about service quality, accountability, and public safety.

This announcement comes amid ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to strengthen oversight and professionalize the sector, ensuring that security providers meet the required standards. Citizens and businesses are encouraged to consult official listings of companies in good standing to avoid risks associated with unlicensed operators.

The police service has assured that continuous monitoring and enforcement measures will be implemented to bring all private security companies into compliance, reinforcing trust in the sector.
